This summer, the Custom House Maritime Museum will be proud to host the tall ship replica Nao Trinidad as it sails into Newburyport flying the Spanish flag. The original Nao Trinidad sailed around the world between 1519 and 1522 which at that time was the greatest maritime feat in history. This stunning 200-ton sailing vessel is a replica of Magellan’s historic vessel built by the same private foundation behind El Galeon – a previous tall ship visitor to Newburyport, Fundación Nao Victoria. From June 29 through July 9, 2023, the Nao Trinidad will be docked at Waterfront Park.
Chris Silva, Executive Director of the Custom House Maritime Museum, noted: “This is a great opportunity for Greater Newburyport and North Shore residents to see this impressive tall ship up close. Newburyport will be the place where you will be able to see the vessel, board it, and explore the entire ship.”
The Custom House Maritime Museum and the Maritime Days Committee, chaired by Bob Cronin, are creating a week-long celebration that includes additional events including a catered Welcome Party on Friday, June 30 to include exclusive access to the ship, followed by education events for youth groups and educators, and opportunities for local businesses to use the ship for private events.
Cronin states, “This is also a great opportunity for businesses and the city to welcome tall ship enthusiasts near and far at the height of the tourism season.”
