Notes regarding time
Events are subject to change or cancel. It is good practice to confirm events prior to attending.Description
CraneExplorer events are designed to appeal to families with children ages 5-12 while giving their parents a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Crane Estate. These hikes and interactive education programs cover less ground to accommodate smaller strides and have more frequent stops to look, listen, and learn from our CraneOutdoors guides. Interactive education programs include hands-on activities to engage learners of all ages. Not just a walk in the woods, these family-friendly experiences teach kids and delight adults by exploring the wonder of our coastal habitats and the rich history of the Crane Estate. Family pricing is for one “average” nuclear family (approximately 2 adults and 2 children). If you have a larger family or want to bring additional family members please purchase additional tickets.
Wide-open coastal sites are the location of choice for wintering Snowy Owls; common perches are dunes and salt hay staddles. In winters past, these owls have been frequent visitors to the Crane Wildlife Refuge.
Join us for a family snowy owl prowl as we hike the dunes in search of these magnificent birds. As a family hike, this hike will be shorter and slower than our standard snowy owl prowl, focusing on engaging children in the natural world. If you are an adult with no or older children who would prefer a more serene hiking experience, please check out or standard Snowy Owl Prowl events.
Because we will be looking for Snowy Owls, sometimes on distant dunes, please bring binoculars if you have them. Due to the risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, we likely will not be able to provide any loaner optical gear.
For public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, please do not attend if you have any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. Reach out to let us know if this is the case. Thank you!
Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible and issued full refunds.
The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and river boat trips will be emailed to registrants before the event at the address provided upon registration.
